Is the mileage genuine? Spotting a rolled-back odometer
Rolled-back mileage is one of the most common problems with used cars. How to spot it from documents, wear and diagnostics.

Mileage is one of the main factors that determines a car's price, which is why it still gets "adjusted". Rolled-back mileage means not just overpaying – it also means unexpected repairs, because parts are far more worn than they seem.
Why mileage gets rolled back
The price difference between a car with 300,000 km and 180,000 km can be several thousand euros. Changing the reading is technically simple, so buyers need to check for themselves.
1. Documents
The oldest and most reliable method is to compare the mileage across different sources:
roadworthiness test records;
the service book and repair invoices;
oil change stickers in the engine bay;
vehicle history reports based on the VIN.
If the mileage "goes down" over time, or doesn't change for a long time, that's a clear warning sign.
2. Wear and tear
The interior tells a lot. A worn steering wheel, gear lever, driver's seat bolster, pedal rubbers and door handles should match the stated mileage. A brand-new steering wheel or pedals in an older car should also raise questions.
3. Electronic diagnostics
In modern cars, mileage is stored not only in the instrument cluster but also in other control units. Diagnostics can compare these values – if they don't match, the mileage has most likely been changed.
4. Mechanical condition
High mileage shows in the mechanics too: suspension bushes, brake discs, clutch feel, engine noise. When a "low-mileage" car has all the problems of a high-mileage one, it's time to stop.
What to do if something doesn't match
Ask the seller for an explanation and documents. If there isn't one, it's better to look for another car – or at least negotiate the price based on the real mileage.
