Buying a Used Car Before Winter: What to Check
Buying a used car in autumn? Check the battery, tyres, heating and rust. Tips from real inspections in Lithuania.

Autumn is a popular time to buy a used car. But a cold autumn morning reveals problems you would never notice in summer. Here is what we check on every inspection at this time of year. All photos are from our real inspections.
1. Why autumn inspections are different
Cold weather is the best test a car can get. A weak battery, old tyres or poor heating cause no trouble in summer. On the first cold days they become expensive headaches. Sellers often don't mention them because they haven't noticed yet.
2. Battery and electrics
Ask the seller not to start the car before you arrive. A cold engine should start right away, without long cranking. If the starter turns slowly, the battery is probably weak.
Also look at the wiring in the engine bay. Worn insulation, loose wires or amateur add-on wiring show that someone has been tinkering. Damp, cold weather quickly brings such spots to life – with warning lights and faults.
3. Tyres and wheels
In Lithuania, winter tyres are mandatory from 10 November to 31 March. Their tread must be at least 3 mm deep. We recommend starting the winter with at least 5–6 mm. Ask whether a set of winter tyres comes with the car.
Check the tyre age. On the sidewall you will find four digits: the first two are the week, the last two the year. For example, “2425” means week 24 of 2025. A tyre older than 6 years hardens and grips worse in the cold, even with plenty of tread left.
The tyre production date on the sidewall.
Inspect the sidewalls and rims. Cracks or cuts in the sidewall are dangerous – such a tyre can burst. Scuffed rims show the car often hit kerbs. Corrosion on the rim edge can let air slowly escape.

4. Heating and window fogging
Turn on the heating and see whether the cabin warms up within 10–15 minutes of driving. Check every mode: windscreen, footwell, seat heating and rear window heating. If the windows keep fogging up, there may be moisture inside or the air conditioning may not work.
Checking that the climate control works in every mode.
5. Rust, underbody and brakes
Road salt eats metal fast, so always look under the car before winter. We check the sills, wheel arches, subframe and suspension arms. Surface rust is normal, but flaking or holed metal is a serious problem.
Underbody covers and sill – all in good order here.
Rear suspension with surface rust – not dangerous yet, but worth watching.
Check the brake discs too. A clear lip on the disc edge and a rusty surface mean discs and pads will need replacing soon. That is an extra cost you can use when negotiating the price.

6. Conclusion
When buying a car before winter, check the battery, tyres, heating and underbody. Faults you find are not always a reason to walk away. But they are a strong argument when negotiating the price.
